john greenwood This is such great music. I can listen to it over and over without tiring of it. The music is warm and inviting, especially on the vinyl, played with such grace and ease. It is easy to miss appreciating just how good these musicians are. I feel like I found a gold nugget here. Great record, thanks for the music. Favorite track: Once in a while.

Andrew Schamess This record showcases avant-garde musicians doing very straight versions of 60's standards. No screeching and banging. No long solos. Just the melody with a few minor variations. So why is the album so good? The compositions they chose are quite lovely. Plus, I think these are musicians who really appreciate what is in a good tune. They play it to show you what's there. Somehow, this totally works. Favorite track: Chelsea Bridge.

Allsopp, Vosloo, Stanley, Giles present a second LP of recordings from the American songbook. The first record 'A Flower is a Lonesome Thing' quickly sold out and was enthusiastically received by the press and listeners alike.
All four musicians are known for their more avant-garde work in bands such as The Golden Age of Steam, Twelves and Nostalgia 77. It is now possible to see how brightly they shine in a more traditional setting.
The combo are strident and muscular on the up-tempo swing of 'One for Swiss' and Coltraneʼs 'Syeeda's Song Flute'. On the ballads 'Moonlight on Vermont' and the Duke Ellington classics ʻChelsea bridgeʼ and 'Istafan', Allsopp is by both triumphantly languid and vulnerable in equal measure.
'Once in a while' is a timely reminder of the lasting appeal of these great tunes, rendered with playful purpose by great players.
